Three things you can do right now…
STOP RESEARCHING
Researching for your creative project is one of Dante’s rings of hell, and it will trap you in its unending vortex of procrastination. Close your browser! Cancel your library holds! You don’t need to know how many CCs of strychnine will kill a British detective or the entire history of Flamenco dance in order to make your thing. Stop it. I mean it! Stop.
TAKE ACTION
There is movement, and there is action. Research is movement. It lets you spin in little circles while gaining a false sense of productivity. Taking more classes can be movement. Meeting people for coffee to talk about your project but not actually doing your project? Sorry, that’s movement. It might be encouraging, but it’s movement.
You need to take action. Action moves in lines (not circles), it thrusts us forward, and it results in tangible evidence of work (written pages, paint on the canvas, new guitar string callouses). It also makes us feel more confident, which fuels the creative practice.
CREATE A PLAN (this is where I come in)
You’re here because you want to do/make/create something, but you can’t seem to make it happen. You’ve probably created bits and pieces of the big project, but you haven’t finished. You may have started on the path toward a creative practice with the best of intentions, but it didn’t stick.
How do I know this? Been there. Am there. Will be there again.
But that’s okay! Because a new season is always around the corner.
